An old rail line leading to Hoquiam Plywood is falling into disrepair and threatens to put the business under. Here’s the story.
I have to admit that writing about railroads is one of those things I enjoy just a little bit more. This may be due to my father’s passion for trains, or the fact that [...]

The other kind of swearing

The initiation into the Hoquiam City Council should really be more fun. They could have made Carla Streifel sing a fight song, steal a street sign or streak through the quad on Monday night.
But no. She raises her hand and swears allegiance to Hoquiam and some other stuff. Maybe the next Council member will face [...]

`The horror! The horror!’

This is the epitome of good intentions gone wrong. I believe that Joe Strummer deserves any and all recognition for his influence on modern music, but this Telecaster replica is a travesty.

It’s a $900 slap in the face. The faded, beaten body looks so fake and soulless I could barely hold the camera still.
I [...]

Home sweet pink home

Yeah it’s pink. And some sort of ancient stucco. But it’s home.

This is the Roosevelt Apartments, an old — somewhat classy — building up on the hill off Broadway in Aberdeen. My dad calls it Hotel California. It has some character and it has big windows, which is pretty much all I was interested in [...]

Shooting the river

Hoquiam River, originally uploaded by jonesdaily.
An early morning photo of the boats tied up along the Hoquiam River. I took this as I walked the detour route on Riverside Avenue last week.
For the record: This was originally posted to Flickr just to see how it would work. The fancy post-via-email-from-cell-phone thing has not. And it’s an [...]

Welcome to Beauty College

Here’s my favorite ironic photo of today:

This is in a back alley near downtown Aberdeen. It just jumped out at me as I was wandering around the streets.
I don’t really know the story behind this place, but feel free to make up your own. I’m sure the truth is probably much less entertaining.

Cabelas in Lacey

My brother came out today - well - yesterday. We watched some movies and he told me about Sniper School. Then we headed out to the new-ish Cabelas in Lacey and took in all the outdoor wonder.
Now he’s back at base and I’m at a bar waiting for the WSU basketball game [...]

City forester “gets ahead of himself”

Here’s one of the more ironic stories I’ve had to write.
Cedar theft is apparently a big problem around here. They have motion sensors stuck randomly out in the woods to alarm authorities of illegal logging. It’s kind of weird, but true.

Monica Garcia-Lopez

This is pretty much how my phone call with my dad went last night.
“So,” I said. “I think I wrote the most depressing story ever today.”
“Really,” he answered. “You have to write about a dead baby or something?”
“Yeah,” I said. “A 6-month-old little girl. She suffocated.”
“Oh.”
Meet Monica Garcia-Lopez.
I don’t know much about her short life [...]
