A new Map “page” has been added to the top of this blog that has a photo link (as seen above) that will take you to a customized/interactive/embeddable Google map that will let you explore places, pictures and videos I hit throughout Grays Harbor County.
This is just a start. I hope to actually update this map and clear old crap as I find interesting places or stories. Unfortunately, WordPress does not support embedding Google maps to my knowledge, so you have what is not quite as cool, but equally functional, a simple link.
More on random links:
For the record: I was actually excited about building this map after reading about the Spokesman snow map on Mulvaney’s blog. That seems strange. I even wrote “map” on the back of my hand so I wouldn’t forget to try it.
I have added new “good people doing good things” for Bimmel’s old blog on new stuff and Lisa’s new blog on old stuff. If you think you’re a good person doing a good thing, you’re probably wrong, but you can send me a link anyway.
In other news: I picked up “The Ultimate Collection” of The Pogues in preparation for St. Patrick’s Day II tomorrow.
Here’s to all those with songs in their hearts and whiskey on their lips. Slainte.
Mr. Jones,
I totally dig the map idea and suddenly got a burning rage to see it embedded properly.
I dunno if you’ve tried this, but if you’re using the visual editor to edit your Map page, click on the Code tab at the top and paste Google’s embedding code in there where you’d want it.
The visual editor doesn’t like parsing code and will escape it by putting it in code tags. I tried to paste a link in by hand the other day and WordPress didn’t like it at all. Lemme know how that works.
No joy, Vic. The embedded map will show up in the box when I switch over from “code” to “visual” but it just turns into a text link “View Larger Map” when I publish the post.
I’m open to other ideas.
Alright. I tried it on my test install at home, copied over all the iframe crap and published it. It worked great.
So I cussed a bit at it and then searched for whether other people could post Google Maps on WordPress.
Turns out wordpress.com is not too keen on allowing iframes … which means that this counts as a super no-joy situation.
Here’s a forum thread with a buttload of links to demand compliance from WP.com support.
So I fear your littlest Google Map will have to stay unembedded until the WordPress.com people give that function some love. You might want to try some of the Google Maps plugins, but those probably want to draw iframes too, which would still not work.
Utterly frustrating.
Thanks for trying. I’ll just have to stay on top of it until I figure out something better.
