Sunshine and justice, originally uploaded by jonesdaily.
I’m covering the courthouse all day. A lawyer recently asked if I liked covering cops and courts. I told him it lets me see the best and worst of a community. He said he only gets to see the worst.
UPDATE: The lawyer added that anytime someone goes to court, it’s bad. There is only one good reason to walk into a courtroom, he said. Adoption.
Today was mostly people getting sentenced for assaulting police officers. About five people got prison time today for picking on a cop somehow, including some pretty creative/disgusting efforts.

The title of this post gave me an involuntary emotional response because sunshine and justice and some of my favorite things, in that order.
How would you say you see the best in the community through the beat?
You get to see most of it just following public safety. You see emergency crews save lifes, bravery in dangerous situations, citizens that rise to the occassion and unity during tragedy.
In the courthouse, it’s mostly about justice, closure or redemption, but I’m not a defense lawyer like the guy I was talking to.
The worst is easy to spot.
