Stouffer-Moore’s Floor Covering building burned last night in a spectacular blaze. Hopefully, the paper is putting together an online slideshow, but here are a few that didn’t make the cut:

Gone fish shootin’

My editor sent me out to shoot a fishing derby today. With all the recent wind and rain, I was not thrilled. But I think it turned out okay. Above is a bunch of salmon hanging just outside the fishery near Humptulips. Here’s a few more outtakes:

Here’s Chris McCalib of Federal Way at the weigh-in [...]

From the Seattle Times
A Seattle Times reporter has spent the past couple weeks embedded with Landen’s platoon and sending stories back to his blog. He finally posted a group photo, which includes Landen.
For the record: I talked to Landen this morning and he seems to be doing well. He appreciates everyone’s letters.

Hard news in a perfect world

In a perfect world, this would be the worst news I ever had to report on for the paper. It might be a little boring, but I think I’d get used to it.

Some kick-grass lawnmowers

Spent much of yesterday standing in the rain watching people race some high-powered lawnmowers.
Kind of fun. Kind of ridiculous, but everyone seemed to be having a decent time.

Democracy goes to the birds

So the chickens win.
For now.
A lot of people made fun of the attention this story received, but it obviously hit a nerve. A couple council members stated they received more calls on the domestic fowl issue than on almost any other topic during their service.
These decisions effect people’s everyday lives — on both sides [...]

King of the chickens

Meet Anthony Crumpler, 55, who I have dubbed the Chicken King, solely because it’s fun to say, not to poke fun or praise. He raises about 80 chickens at the edge of Hoquiam and he’s ruffling plenty of feathers.
And this chicken just makes my blood run cold:

This may be my favorite news photo ever. I snapped a photo of two deputies celebrating the end of a 90-minute standoff with a quick fist-bump as the suspect is loaded into an ambulance. Nothing says justice like a fist-bump.
