I spent the afternoon shooting surfers at Westhaven State Park in Westport. Lots of dudes and babes soaking up the ridiculous weather.

Not a bad assignment.

I have probably mentioned this story to a couple of people, but we finally ran it today. This is 71-year-old Kitty Rowell who now lives out of her car after her home burned down in December.

It’s a situation no one has been able, or willing, to fix. But it seems like something is definitely wrong here.

When another reporter mentioned this story to me she said it would be a chance to “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” Though I doubt anyone is comfortable with this situation.

Hopefully something will work out.

I interviewed her at her property this week where she keeps her stuff in a broken RV and sleeps in her car because the city does not allow people to live in RVs within city limits. It was pissing rain through the whole interview.

I got the sweet gig of looking for warm weather art yesterday as record temperatures hit 81 degrees in Hoquiam. This is 3-year-old Jaimeson chucking cherry blossoms at me during a flower fight in the park.

I got lucky. I stumbled on this flower fight almost as soon as I started looking for wildart and it turned into pretty good photos. My publisher seemed to like it too.

UPDATE: Here’s the story on the fire we ran today.

So I was standing in a parking lot in Hoquiam this afternoon when I got an urgent call from one of my editors.

“We’ve got a fire with visible flames,” he said. An apartment building on the hill in Aberdeen.

“Alright, I’ve got my camera. I can head right over,” I replied. “Where is it exactly?”

He said it was on 9th Street — across from a park.

Weird, I thought. I live in an apartment building on 9th Street across from a park.

Oh crap.

So it turns out my apartment building caught fire today. No one was injured, but a couple units were destroyed. I haven’t been inside, but I believe mine is fine.

We’ll have a story on it tomorrow. I stood around and nervously took pictures while fellow reporter Rachel talked to all my neighbors in the pissing rain. I suppose it could have been worse.
